Passports

Passports and Travel Documents

 Important Notes:

Prior to starting a passport application, Lebanese citizens are required to check the jurisdiction guidelines in order to verify whether their state of residence falls under the Lebanese Embassy’s jurisdiction (Washington D.C), or under its affiliated Consulates General (Los Angeles, Detroit or New York).

Lebanese citizens that possess an expired machine readable passport (passport number preceded by RL) or biometric passport (passport number preceded by LR) are advised to apply for a “new passport”. This process will take 3 months to complete (at no additional cost), or 3-4 weeks via DHL Fasttrack (rushed service, for an additional fee of $85). For more information about the new passport application and DHL Fasttrack payments, please visit the new passport section. Note: Delays are expected due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Passport renewals” or manual extensions are strictly granted to Lebanese citizens that possess an expired machine readable passport (passport number preceded by RL) void of any previous extensions. A manual extension is allowed once, on conditions that passport holders travel to Lebanon within the authorized timeframe and apply for a new passport upon their arrival. Moreover, renewed passports will be valid for one year only.

Note: expired biometric passports (passport number preceded by LR) are not eligible for manual extensions. For more information about manual renewals, please visit the passport renewal section.

First time applicants in pursuit of the biometric passport (passport number preceded by LR) must go through the process in Lebanon. If the applicant already carries the biometric passport and it has expired, he/she is advised to apply for a new one through the embassy.  For more information about the new biometric passport, please visit the new passport section.

Applicants that possess the red Lebanese passport (handwritten) are required to apply for a navy blue machine readable passport. The Lebanese Directorate of General Security passed an official memo in accordance with International Civil Aviation Organization verifying that handwritten passports are no longer accepted at worldwide airports as of November 24, 2015. For more information about this application process please visit the new passport section.
